Home Assistant’s local voice assistant stack has matured to the point where fully local, cloud-free voice control is a genuinely viable alternative to Alexa or Google Assistant, not just a novelty.
SmartThings and Home Assistant sit at opposite ends of the smart-home-platform spectrum — one prioritizes simplicity and Samsung ecosystem integration, the other prioritizes total local control and customization.
Bluetooth Low Energy sensors and trackers have limited range from a single Home Assistant controller — Bluetooth proxies solve that by relaying BLE signals from multiple points around the house.
A dedicated wall-mounted dashboard makes Home Assistant genuinely usable for every household member, not just the person who set it up — worth the investment once your automation setup reaches a certain complexity.
Home Assistant’s built-in backup system is easy to ignore until the SD card or drive it runs on fails — at which point months of automations and configuration are gone unless a real backup routine was already in place.
Matter was supposed to fix smart home fragmentation, and Home Assistant’s Matter support has matured enough that picking Matter-first devices genuinely pays off now rather than being a bet on future compatibility.
Running Zigbee or Z-Wave devices through Home Assistant means picking a USB radio coordinator, and the choice affects everything downstream — range, protocol support, and how much manual configuration you will do in Zigbee2MQTT or ZHA.
No cloud dependency for locking and unlocking — three Z-Wave deadbolts that pair directly with a local Home Assistant setup, and the one thing to confirm before buying.
Regular microSD cards weren’t built for Home Assistant’s constant writes. Three high-endurance capacities, plus when to skip SD entirely and boot from USB instead.
Home Assistant not connecting: restart Zigbee/Z-Wave coordinator, pin USB by-id path, check VLANs, restart integrations, replace batteries.
