Dust buildup is one of the most common and most preventable causes of home server failure, and it kills hardware two ways: it insulates heatsinks so fans can’t shed heat, and it clogs intake filters until drives and CPUs run hot enough to shorten their lifespan by years.
How often actually depends on your environment, not a fixed schedule
A server in a clean, carpet-free office might go six months between cleanings. The same server in a basement, near a litter box, or in a house with pets and forced-air heating can accumulate a concerning amount of dust in six to eight weeks. Check monthly the first few months to learn your specific environment’s buildup rate.
Compressed air is for spot cleaning, not deep cleaning
A can of compressed air handles fan blades and vents well, but pushing dust deeper into a heatsink’s fins rather than out is a real risk if you’re not careful with angle and short bursts. For genuinely dusty systems, powering down completely and using a soft brush alongside the air, working from the top of the case downward, gets more dust actually out rather than redistributed.

Intake filters need a wash, not just a shake
Magnetic and slide-in dust filters trap a surprising amount of debris, and shaking them out only removes the loose top layer. Pull them and rinse under a tap every couple of cleanings, letting them fully air-dry before reinstalling — a damp filter reintroduced into a running system is worse than a dusty one.

Watch fan RPM and drive temps as your early warning system
Most NAS and server management dashboards show fan speed and drive temperature history. A gradual upward creep in fan RPM at the same ambient room temperature over a few months is a reliable sign dust is accumulating faster than your cleaning schedule accounts for, well before it shows up as an actual failure.
None of this is glamorous work, but a $150 mini PC running 24/7 for three years of dust neglect fails a lot sooner than one cleaned on a regular schedule — and drives running consistently hot lose life expectancy in a way that’s easy to ignore until a rebuild is already underway.
