Power cuts rarely take out everything you care about at once. Usually it is the fibre ONT, the router, a mesh node and a small NAS sitting in a cupboard, all of which would happily keep running on a surprisingly modest battery. The question is whether a portable power station is the right box for that job, and if so, which size.
This EcoFlow power station buyer’s guide covers four models a home lab or home network owner is likely to shortlist: the RIVER 3 230, the RIVER 3 Plus, the DELTA 3 and the DELTA 3 Max. It also covers the part most listings gloss over, which is the difference between an inverter that switches over in milliseconds and a true online UPS that never switches at all.
What EcoFlow is known for, and the main trade-off
EcoFlow built its reputation on fast charging and dense packaging. Across the current range the company quotes AC recharge times measured in tens of minutes rather than hours, paired with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells that tolerate far more charge cycles than the NMC chemistry older power stations used.
The trade-off is that these are inverter-based backup devices, not data-centre UPS hardware. They advertise a UPS mode with switchover in milliseconds, which is fast enough for most consumer gear, but the AC output is still interrupted briefly when mains fails. There is also no serial or USB shutdown signalling of the kind a NAS expects from a conventional UPS, so automatic safe shutdown is not a given.
The lineup at a glance
Capacity in watt-hours tells you how long something runs. Output in watts tells you what you can plug in at all. Those two numbers move independently, and a lot of buying mistakes come from reading one and ignoring the other.
| Model | Capacity | AC output / X-Boost | Stated switchover | Expansion and cells |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| RIVER 3 230 | 230 Wh | 300 W AC, up to 600 W with X-Boost | Under 20 ms | No expansion; LFP, 3000+ cycles |
| RIVER 3 Plus | 286 Wh | 600 W steady, 1200 W X-Boost surge | Under 10 ms | EB300 or EB600 packs, up to 858 Wh; LFP |
| DELTA 3 | 1024 Wh | 1800 W AC, X-Boost over 2600 W resistive | Not stated in listing | Up to 5 kWh with DELTA series packs; LFP, 4000 cycles to 80% |
| DELTA 3 Max | 2048 Wh | 2400 W AC, 3400 W X-Boost | Under 10 ms | Expandable; LFP, IP65 battery pack on DELTA 3 |
The RIVER 3 pair: router, modem and laptop duty
RIVER 3 230
At 230 Wh this is a network-closet battery, not a house battery. The listing quotes 300 W AC output with X-Boost lifting resistive loads to 600 W, one-hour AC recharge via X-Stream, 2.6 hours from a 110 W solar input, and a sub-20 ms switchover. LFP cells rated at 3000+ cycles mean you can cycle it regularly without worrying much about wear.
It suits anyone who wants a modem, router and one mesh node to survive a short cut. Skip it if you have a spinning-disk NAS or a mini PC, because the output ceiling will stop you before the capacity does.

RIVER 3 Plus
The Plus is the more interesting unit for home networks: 286 Wh, 600 W steady output with a 1200 W X-Boost surge, seven outlets including three UPS-supported AC sockets, and a quoted switchover under 10 ms. EcoFlow also markets PC/NAS-compatible software alerts and automatic data saving on low battery, which is closer to what a server owner actually needs.
Expansion matters here too. An EB300 or EB600 pack stacks capacity to 858 Wh over a pogo-pin connection, so you can start small and grow. Our comparison of UPS options for a home server or NAS explains why that shutdown signalling is worth checking against your specific NAS model first.

DELTA 3 and DELTA 3 Max for multi-hour backup
DELTA 3
1024 Wh and 1800 W of AC output put the DELTA 3 in genuine appliance territory. EcoFlow quotes a full charge in 56 minutes using combined 500 W solar and 1500 W AC input, 80% in about 30 minutes, 4000 cycles to 80% capacity, an IP65-rated battery pack, and expansion to 5 kWh using DELTA 3, DELTA Pro 3 or DELTA 2 Max packs. Thirteen appliances can be connected at once.
This is the unit for a fridge plus the network rack plus phone charging during a half-day outage. It is more than most people need for networking alone.

DELTA 3 Max
Double the capacity at 2048 Wh, 2400 W continuous and 3400 W under X-Boost, 0–80% charging in 1.13 hours, and a stated transfer time under 10 ms. Watch the X-Boost figure, because X-Boost works by shaping the output and is intended for resistive loads such as heaters and kettles. Motor-driven and electronically regulated appliances should be sized against the plain AC rating instead.

Adding solar
A 160 W foldable panel with N-type cells, 25% quoted conversion efficiency, an IP68 rating and a 30–60° kickstand turns any of these into a slow-recharging generator. One panel will not keep a DELTA 3 Max topped up under load, but it will refill a RIVER over a sunny day. Our whole-home battery backup roundup covers where panels stop being a practical answer.

Software, ecosystem and the honest limits
The EcoFlow app handles monitoring, charge and discharge scheduling, charge-rate limits and firmware updates, and the DELTA 3 Max listing highlights real-time energy tracking and priority settings. It is cloud-linked, so account sign-in is part of setup, and local-only control is limited compared with a conventional UPS on USB.
Then there is the switchover question. A sub-10 ms transfer is fine for a router, a laptop charger and most consumer NAS units, but a true online UPS has no transfer at all because the inverter always runs. For a server with a single power supply and no graceful shutdown path, that difference matters, and the APC UPS lineup comparison covers those models.
Anything involving household circuits, transfer switches or in-wall wiring is a different project entirely. Follow local electrical code and use a licensed electrician where required.
Which one for your situation
Work out your load first. Add the wattage of everything you want to keep alive, divide the station’s watt-hours by that figure, then allow roughly 10–15% for inverter overhead. A modem, router and small switch sit comfortably inside a RIVER’s output limit, which is why a 286 Wh unit stretches further than people expect.
- Router and modem only, or a satellite dish: RIVER 3 230. See our Starlink outage runtime planning guide for dish-specific sizing.
- Network plus a two-bay NAS or a mini PC: RIVER 3 Plus, with an EB600 if outages in your area run long.
- Fridge, rack and lighting for several hours: DELTA 3.
- Whole-floor essentials or power tools: DELTA 3 Max.
If you only care about clean shutdown for a server, buy a conventional UPS and spend the difference on disks. A power station earns its place when you also want the battery to leave the house.
Two questions worth settling first
Does the RIVER 3 Plus work as a NAS UPS?
EcoFlow advertises PC/NAS-compatible alerts and automatic data saving on low battery alongside the sub-10 ms switchover. Confirm compatibility with your exact NAS firmware on the maker’s site, since supported device lists change.
Can the battery be replaced later?
These are sealed packs rather than user-swappable batteries like a traditional UPS, where replacing the cells is routine. Expansion packs add capacity instead, and the LFP ratings of 3000+ cycles on the RIVER 3 230 and 4000 cycles to 80% on the DELTA 3 are what you are buying into.
